KS1 Ponds Habitat Interactive Video

Client BBC Bitesize

WE WERE ASKED TO…

Create an innovative pilot interactive video for BBC Bitesize to support learning in the classroom and at home for pupils in KS1. The topic chosen was ‘Pond Habitats’ to support the science curriculum at this key stage.

SO WE MADE…

An HTML5 interactive environment which holds a wealth of educational content. Content is delivered to the user via bespoke animations and a variety of interactive activities encourage further engagement with the key educational messages. We also use BBC archive footage and stock photography of animals and environments to ensure that the ‘identification’ requirement of the KS1 science curriculum is fulfilled. To cater for pupils of different cognitive abilities we provided a range of routes into the content. ‘Explore’ mode provided a very simple dip in/dip out approach, whilst the ‘Quests’ provided a more curated approach to the content with progression through the content shown at all times. To allow teachers to use the content in the classroom more easily, we also provided users with a menu to access each part of the content directly. The full interactive video and all of the content within it was created with the support of an educational consultant, ensuring that curriculum needs were met and the activity was appropriate for the audience.

AS A RESULT…

The activity was very well received by the BBC Bitesize team who carried out rigourous user testing with the children in the target key stage group. BBC Bitesize are considering the learnings from this pilot and the research testing, and these learnings will inform future interactive videos commissioned by the BBC Bitesize team.
