Aardman Equality, Diversity & Inclusion update, August 2026

Aardman is committed to being open and transparent about the work we are doing to improve representation throughout our workforce and to increase the level of on-screen diversity in our productions. This is the twelfth in a series of regular updates documenting our progress.

Progress made in the previous six months (March – August 2026):

The below correlates to the priorities we set ourselves in our previous Equality, Diversity & Inclusion update  in February 2026:

  • Finalise and roll out our new three-year Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Strategy for 2026-2028: While we originally anticipated publishing our new Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Strategy during this six-month period, this work is still in development

Since joining Aardman in January 2026, Chief People Officer Helen Beard has taken time to build a deeper understanding of the studio and our people priorities. In the last six months, we have worked to further weave in our Equality, Diversity & Inclusion priorities within the wider People and Culture Strategy and Aardman's long-term studio strategy through to 2030. This approach will ensure that EDI remains fully integrated into how we grow and develop as a studio.

In this next period, we will continue gathering employee feedback and insights before finalising the 2026-2030 EDI strategy. A staff survey planned for September will provide an important opportunity for colleagues to share their experiences and priorities, helping to shape the strategy.

While publication has been delayed, this decision has been taken to ensure the strategy is meaningful and aligned with Aardman's wider studio strategy. We will look to finalise and roll-out the EDI strategy before the next EDI update.

  • 2026 is our 50th anniversary year: an opportunity to celebrate all we have accomplished, and a moment to look ahead and set clear, ambitious goals that support the long-term implementation of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy across all future projects and activities: Over the past six months, we have continued to deliver a range of activities designed to strengthen inclusion across the studio.

To mark International Women's Day in March, we organised several initiatives celebrating the contribution of women across Aardman as well as creating opportunities for learning and discussions:

  • We worked with our colleague Lisa Whiting on her Women at Work photography series, to feature women from across the studio and highlight the breadth of experiences represented within our workforce.

  • We ran our “What I Wish I'd Known” campaign, inviting anonymous contributions from employees sharing advice and lessons learned throughout their careers. This was then published on our intranet as well as posted across the noticeboards in our office.

  • We launched the third instalment of our internal mentoring programme, creating seven new mentor-mentee pairings.

  • We hosted an internal conversation on ‘Women in Leadership’, featuring senior female leaders Joanna Cave (Finance Director) and Emma Hardie (Executive Commercial and Brand Director) sharing insights into their career journeys, leadership experiences, barriers they had encountered, and the importance of mentoring and support networks. The session was recorded and shared on our intranet.

  • Our partners at Inclusive Employers delivered a session focused on wellbeing, providing practical tools to help employees navigate challenging discussions in an inclusive and respectful way.

Additional EDI work:

  • Equal Parenting Week:

    • As part of Equal Parenting Week in April, we shared resources and information highlighting workplace support available for parents and carers. Alongside this we audited our policies to see what further support we can provide for colleagues balancing caring responsibilities. For our parenting policies, we are exploring what this looks like case by case. We also aim to be more open with job shares/part-time roles wherever possible, including for crew.

    • In addition, we celebrated our partnership with the pregnancy and baby charity, Tommy’s. The partnership gives us exclusive webinars and resources. It also provides managers with e-learning tools to help support all colleagues through any pregnancy journey.

  • Pride Month:

    • Throughout June and into July, we delivered a programme of Pride-related activities celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. Activities included film screenings of LGBTQ+ themed animated films, sharing resources on why PRIDE is important and its origin, and a staff T-shirt design competition with the winning designs worn during the Bristol PRIDE march

    • For the Bristol PRIDE march, the studio designed a dragon puppet mascot, developed by employees to become a recurring feature of future Pride celebrations at Aardman.

  • Meet-and-greets and EDI Champions:

    • We held two meet-and-greet sessions in February and March for newcomers. These sessions introduced new starters to Aardman's Equality, Diversity & Inclusion activities and provided opportunities to learn more about our wider initiatives and networks. Following this, several employees expressed an interest in supporting future EDI activities and becoming new EDI Champions for the company.

  • Outreach to local schools and young people:

Priorities for the coming six months (September 2026 – February 2027):

Our primary focus over the next six months will be to finalise our 2026-2030 Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Strategy and ensure it is fully aligned with Aardman's wider People Strategy and long-term studio vision through to 2030.

As part of this process, we will gather additional employee feedback, including insights from our September staff survey. We will also explore opportunities for greater executive-level ownership of EDI priorities with board members selected to champion the strategy across the business.

Lastly, we will continue building our outreach programme by working with more schools, community groups and organisations across the South West. In addition to increasing activity levels, we want to develop longer-term partnerships that create sustained opportunities for engagement rather than one-off interactions.

As we move into the next phase of our Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Strategy, we remain committed to learning and improving. While there is still more work to do, we are encouraged by the progress made over the past six months and remain focused on creating a studio where everyone feels seen.
