UK charity initiative Gromit Unleashed goes global
K charity phenomenon, Gromit Unleashed is set for international attention in a new exhibition this summer of giant Gromit sculptures in Hong Kong.
Last year, Gromit Unleashed fever gripped the nation as 80 giant sculptures of Aardman’s lovable canine character formed a public arts trail in Bristol and the surrounding areas, raising millions for Bristol Children’s Hospital charity, Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal.
Following its success, Gromit Unleashed has attracted attention from across the globe, with enquiries flooding in from Europe, America, Canada, Australia, South Africa and the Far East requesting to replicate the initiative in their home countries.
For the first time outside of the UK, 70 new Gromit Unleashed sculptures will come together at ELEMENTS mall in Hong Kong from early July, with each Gromit individually designed and decorated by an array of top designers, celebrities and international brands.
ELEMENTS have teamed up with Gromit Unleashed organisers, Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal and Aardman Animations, to showcase ‘The Greatest Dog Show on Earth’ in Hong Kong bringing the exhibition to fans of loveable animated character Gromit, and visitors to the world-class shopping and leisure place.
Nicola Masters, director at The Grand Appeal, said: “This is an exciting new venture that we are showcasing in Hong Kong, following world-wide interest in Gromit Unleashed. With Aardman’s international reputation and Gromit’s quintessentially British character, this is an ideal way to explore export opportunities in overseas markets.”
In addition to its international appeal, Gromit Unleashed UK continues to raise money for the children’s hospital, due to its ongoing popularity. The charity has now created a retail arm to operate an online shop and Gromit Unleashed store at The Mall at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol, which continues to attract thousands of fans and customers from the area and throughout the UK.
‘The Greatest Dog Show on Earth’ in Hong Kong will feature a display of 5ft and 3 ft high Gromit sculptures on an ornate, two-tier carousel and a centre-piece 4m high Gromit sculpture. The mall will be transformed into a playground environment this summer, exhibiting Gromit in a series of extraordinary new looks. At the end of the exhibition, the giant sculptures will be auctioned in support of Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal and children’s art programmes in hospitals across Hong Kong.
