A 3-day intensive model making course in which participants take a pre-prepared K+S wire armature and customise to a character of their own design with hair, features and costume.
DAY 1 – MOUTHS
An introduction to mouth shape construction demonstrating how to add character and expression with various mouths ranging from pressed and rolled to paper.
DAY 2 – HEADS
Facial details and approaches to eyeballs, along with varying techniques with hair. A day of exploring the most expressive parts of the puppet.
DAY 3 – CLOTHES
Making costumes, working with wire and cloth, small fabricated elements, learning tricks and tips to make the character really come to life.
This will be followed by 1:1 tutorials with Jim Parkyn, with time for the participants to discuss their puppets and receive feedback on their construction and advice on their own projects.

What to bring: All tools are provided but participants are welcome to bring favourites if preferred. Also participants are asked to bring a character design of the model they wish to create.

Jim has worked at Aardman since 2000, starting on the studio’s hugely successful feature film Chicken Run. His credits include Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Creature Comforts, The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists and Timmy Time. Jim has a wealth of experience as a senior model maker and team leader in the puppet department and also has a role as an Aardman ambassador, running model making workshops in venues all around the world.
