A ten day intensive course in which participants are guided through the model making process in greater depth by a highly experienced team of Aardman model makers, finishing with a fully completed model based on their own character design. COST: £3,000
Run by veteran model maker Jim Parkyn alongside another experienced model maker and a costume designer. All tutors are vastly experienced in their own areas of expertise, ensuring that each participant has ample support and feedback throughout every stage of the build.
The course begins with the participant’s pre-prepared designs being individually assessed by the tutors. The wire armatures are then assembled (NB ball and socket armatures can be ordered at a subsidised rate if preferred). The armatures are then cored and cladded and dressed. The model is assembled. Heads and hands are made, along with a set of mouth shapes and eyes. Rigging will also be covered in this course. The tutors will help participants draw out the unique characteristics of their model with finishing touches such as the hair, and a costume specialist will guide participants on how to make costumes for their model.
During the ten days, two masterclasses will be delivered by additional specialists from within the Aardman – one on character design and one on stop frame animation. There will also be tours of the model making departments at both Aardman sites.
At the end of the course each participant will have a one-to-one tutorial with Jim and their finished model will be photographed by a professional photographer on a cove.
